Then I realized I’ve got a tin can bolted to an s-10 frame.

still far better than his though.

Can’t get thrown from the car if you aren’t really in it in the first place
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:23 |

I mean I think so as well but it’ll be no less fatal in an accident.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:24 |

Well at least you can take some solace in your windshield, kinda.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:24 |

Is it though? A chassis from a notoriously unsafe truck under no cage at all. Ratrods are cool, but they aren’t even remotely safe.

That story was a tough read. Especially since he has a young family.
And of course the comment section is a mixture of reasonable analysis and ignorant bile.

I’m in it. I’m in it to win it.

I know if I’m in a high speed collision in my CJ, my seat will tear itself out of the tub and I’ll be strangled to death by the 3-point belt on my rollbar.

Yeah I decided to skip that comment section. It certainly made me consider the safety of my truck.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:30 |

Ah yes you have a factory installed tin can bolted to your frame.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:30 |

It wasn’t the welds that put him in front of that Pontiac.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:33 |

Yeah, but here’s the thing, you probably won’t ever drive it above 40 mph or try to do something dangerous in it. Because that’s not the point of the car. Sure if somebody else hits you, but even crossing the street is dangerous whether you use a crosswalk or not.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:39 |

...you probably won’t ever drive it above 40 mph or try to do something dangerous in it.
Yeah ... let’s go with that.

There aren’t many details in the article but it looks like he was rear ended.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:41 |

He didn’t say safer.

I’d feel much better riding in your vehicle than his based on his comments. Your’s sits on a frame built to be it’s own rigid unit, he hacked up a unibody vehicle and half-ass welded everything. The fact that he can’t even get a good looking weld tells me his welds were probably far from good. Welding takes a lot of skill and any number of things will cause a very poor weld, I know how to weld a bit but I would never touch anything structural unless I had years and years of experience and training. And this doesn’t even touch on the fact that most likely he had no proper design for the cage and just eye-balled it.

i’d trust it over the kart
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:47 |

I’m not convinced it’d be safer in my truck. I think once it is road worthy I’ll bring it to a cage builder and see if they can do anything for me.

My rectangular piece of normal not safety glass in a wooden frame?
![]() 05/02/2018 at 08:50 |
|
And that’s the difference, that guy seemly rejected any advice and assumed he knew better. I feel bad for his family because they’re the ones paying for his incredibly poor life choices.

I’ll just be reshaping my face on the steering wheel, as I have no three-point but have a very secure seat box.

This was from the linked article in the FP post.
Dillard was heading north on Eden Way toward Volvo Parkway when he crashed, said Officer Leo Kosinski, a Chesapeake police spokesman. A Pontiac was traveling the opposite direction, and Dillard lost control and started making a left hand turn, sliding into the other lane and oncoming traffic. The Pontiac couldn’t stop in time and hit Dillard on the passenger rear tire side and spun it out. Dillard was ejected, Kosinski said.

He also tried to sell it last month.

I disagree, 24 isn’t a kid anymore. You’re a grown ass man at that point.

Is your truck technically mid engined? The handling must interesting.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 09:38 |
|
Yeah the engine is quite a bit behind the front axle. I have yet to really test out the handling.

I went through a bit of it, and there are some reasonable comments discussing the welds, tubing used, etc. - not being at all knowledgable on that, I found it useful (you probably would not).
Then there’s the usual ‘he deservs to dye wat an idiet’ crap that is just disgusting...
![]() 05/02/2018 at 09:54 |

Your brain isn’t fully developed till 25 so I can see why he had decision making issues.

I would find that useful and interesting.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 10:05 |

Maybe - but I guarantee that you already know a hell of a lot more about it than I do, so it might be less useful from your perspective, that’s all—
![]() 05/02/2018 at 10:07 |

Ya on one hand the guy engaged in activities that were dangerous in a vehicle that he modified to make unsafe. On the other hand, I’ve done dumber things.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 10:19 |
|
Rat rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, etc are all less safe than modern stuff.
Self awareness is the key though. Like knowing your limitations during the build and keeping safety in mind. Or not being a maniac behind the wheel.
Safety gear needs to be installed with care. That’s not to say it’s necessarily hard- but you can’t skip steps and say “good enough”.

The s10 frame makes the model a safer than it was with its original frame. lol
![]() 05/02/2018 at 11:18 |
|
Possibly not, but the chassis is at least designed function properly as is. His definitely wasn’t, maybe that factored into the crash, maybe not.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 11:48 |

Was there no way to shorten the frame? I am confused.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 13:22 |

I didn’t build it but it all really lines up nicely like this except for the bits hanging out up front.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 13:23 |
|
Yeah no doubt. Also modern brakes and tires.
![]() 05/02/2018 at 14:06 |

HA! It all lines up with the exception of the front 3 feet... Should be interesting.

It’s all apart now. The suspension and brakes were toast. When I get it back together it’ll be 2" lower
